Why is this information important?

After reading a very large number of reactions to this issue, from all across the spectrum, the reactions seem to fall into three basic buckets:

If the story is true that Sarah Palin covered up for her daughter, then
(1) some people will be more likely to vote for her (and McCain)
(2) some people will find the information does not change their vote
(3) some people will be more likely to vote against her.

However, in the current situation, all these voters are being deprived of useful information that may sway their vote. It seems paternalistic to tell these voters: "You may not have information that you say you will find useful in making up your mind."
